Ashley’s Rite of Passage

Ashley’s Rite of Passage

I first met Norman and his three fellow American golfing buddies in 1997 when they came to Northern Ireland to play golf. It was a chance meeting which resulted in enduring friendships, holiday exchanges and many happy shared memories. There’s a great story here but that’s not the story this time.

On 21st May 2011, Norman was flying home to USA after representing his country playing golf in Korea when he passed away in his sleep. Norman was a much loved husband, father, grandfather and friend to many and he is sorely missed. But that’s not the story either.

A few months after Norman’s sudden passing, one of Norman’s daughters, Ashley, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Since last October Ashley has been undergoing gruesome days of 8 hour chemotherapy sessions. Thankfully she is seeing some improvement, but it is a long road ahead.

A few days ago, Perry, Ashley’s sister, made me aware of a video Ashley made where she shaved her hair off before the chemo took it all. Ashley’s amazing mother did not want her daughter to have to shave her head first, so without even telling anyone, she stopped by a salon the night before and had her head shaved.

Please take a few minutes to view Ashley’s very moving and inspirational video and please remember Ashley and her family in your prayers.
